Our Mission
For more than 60 years, we’ve leveraged the power of the private sector for global good. Today, we’re using that experience to transform ideas into investments for green growth, inclusive jobs, and impactful projects.

We mobilize a global community of partners united by a shared purpose - to create opportunity where it's needed most.

What Is the International Finance Corporation (IFC)?
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) provides financing of private-enterprise investment in developing countries around the world, through both loans and direct investments. Affiliated with the World Bank, it also provides advisory services to encourage the development of private enterprise in nations that might be lacking the necessary infrastructure or liquidity for businesses to secure financing.
Key Takeaways
A member of the World Bank Group, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) provides financing for private enterprise investments in developing countries. The IFC says its focus is eliminating poverty through economic development, but critics claim it is more focused on profits than people. In fiscal year 2021, the IFC invested $31.5 billion in financing initiatives.
How the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Works
The IFC was established in 1956 as a member of the World Bank Group, focused on investing in economic development. It claims to be the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in developing countries. The IFC says it also seeks to ensure that private enterprises in developing nations have access to markets and financing.
The IFC's most recent stated goals include the development of sustainable agriculture, expanding small businesses' access to microfinance, supporting infrastructure improvements, as well as promoting climate, health, and education policies. The IFC is governed by its 184 member countries and is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
IFC Global Financing
To raise money, the IFC issues bonds in markets around the world. As of 2021, the IFC has issued $10.553 billion worth across 178 bonds in 20 currencies.
In fiscal year 2021, the IFC invested $31.5 billion in long-term and short-term finance, including $10.8 billion mobilized from other investors.
$14 Billion
The total amount of fast-track financing to support private companies and developing countries impacted by the economic downturn caused by the spread of COVID-19. The $14 million results from an $8 million increase announced in March 2020.
Example of an IFC Investment
The IFC provided $145 million in financing to help one of the world’s largest dairy producers, FrieslandCampina, acquire a controlling stake of 51% of Engro Foods, Pakistan’s leading dairy processor. Although Pakistan is the fourth-largest milk-producing country in the world, demand has consistently outpaced supply due to poor infrastructure and an outdated supply chain. Small subsistence farms account for nearly 80% of the industry’s output.
FrieslandCampina has promised to share its experience and best practices with the smaller farmers who supply Engro Foods, along with the majority of the dairy processors in Pakistan. The stated goal is to help these small farmers increase productivity and reduce waste.
The IFC said it expects that 200,000 farmers and 270,000 distributors will benefit from FrieslandCampina's acquisition of Engro Foods. In addition, the investment is projected to create 1,000 new jobs in the dairy supply chain.
Criticism of the IFC
The IFC has faced criticism as its size and influence around the globe have grown. It says one of its primary goals is to reduce poverty through economic development, but critics say it has begun to act more like a private investment bank with a focus on corporate profit, sometimes with disregard for the environmental and social impacts of its projects.

International Finance Corporation (IFC), United Nations (UN) specialized agency affiliated with but legally separate from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank). Founded in 1956 to stimulate the economic development of its members by providing capital for private enterprises, the IFC has targeted its aid toward less-developed countries and has been their largest multilateral source of private-sector equity financing and loans. The IFC is headed by a president, who also serves as president of the World Bank; governors and executive directors of the World Bank also serve at the IFC, though it has its own operational and legal staff. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., its original membership of 31 had grown to about 175 by the beginning of the 21st century. In financing private enterprises, the IFC makes loans without government guarantee of repayment. Unlike most other organizations of its kind, the IFC cannot stipulate how the proceeds of its loans will be spent. The IFC seeks to diversify its investments, having funded projects in the fields of tourism development, animal feeds, iron and steel, fertilizers, and textiles. Its primary activities include providing direct project financing and technical advice and assistance, mobilizing resources by acting as a catalyst for private investment, and underwriting investment funds. The IFC operates on a weighted-voting system based on members’ subscription shares, with the United States exercising about 25 percent of the total votes—quadruple that of Japan, the second largest shareholder. After the end of the Cold War, demand for IFC loans increased among countries in eastern Europe and among the former republics of the Soviet Union. In the late 1990s the IFC began considering institutional and procedural reforms, including public disclosure, and devoted more attention to the environmental and social impact of its aid.
Between 1956 and the beginning of the 21st century, the IFC provided more than $25 billion to fund projects in nearly 125 countries and arranged for nearly $18 billion in additional financing. In 2000 alone the IFC invested more than $4 billion for 250 projects in nearly 80 countries.

New season of the #CreativeDevelopment podcast kicks off in honor of #WomensDay!
In our first episode of Season Four, Makhtar Diop and Barbara Hendricks talk about her science background, singing career, and lifelong human rights activism – a testament to the power of passion and purpose
Hendricks was born 20 days after the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Yet, she was raised in the South of the United States at a time when Jim Crow laws of segregation reigned – which taught her resilience in the face of adversity.
Not only is Hendricks a powerful singer, she’s also a spent the last 40 years serving proudly as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, advocating for the rights of displaced people around the world.
Tune in to her inspiring journey on your favorite podcast platform:

In Senegal, everyone loves " ̈", a rice and fish dish that warms bellies and creates community.
The key ingredient? Home-grown “broken” rice, unique to the region because of the quality of the grain. But in Senegal, like many other West African countries, farmers are struggling with soaring temperatures and unpredictable rainfall. These consequences of climate change threaten crops—and national food security.
Senegal’s women rice farmers are rising to the challenge. In this story, meet Korka Diaw, a Senegalese farmer and women’s activist leading the charge towards rice self-sufficiency – and helping women achieve financial autonomy. http://wrld.bg/f5XM50QMUPF

I’d encourage you to listen to IFC’s latest #CreativeDevelopment podcast in which Makhtar Diop talks with Barbara Hendricks, the world-renowned opera soprano and concert singer as well as the long-serving Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, advocating for the rights of displaced people around the world, including women. An accomplished woman who defied the adversity of discrimination to pursue her singing career, Ms. Hendricks also prioritizes a lifelong commitment to human rights activism. As we gear up for International Women’s Day later this week, Barbara Hendricks’ passion, purpose and principles from art to activism stand out as an excellent example of the role women play in transforming society for the better.

IFC and Institutional Investors Embark on New Multi-Billion Climate Finance Initiative
Glasgow, United Kingdom, November 3, 2021—IFC announced today that it will partner with two institutional investors, Allianz through Allianz Global Investors, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, to create a new $3 billion global platform for climate-smart investment aligned with the Paris Agreement. The new program, MCPP One Planet, combines institutional investor contributions with IFC's own funds to scale up climate-responsible financing for private companies in emerging markets. MCPP One Planet will create the world's first cross-sectoral portfolio of emerging-market loans aligned with the Paris Agreement. The facility enables institutional investors to directly provide capital for sustainable lending in emerging markets — allowing investors to scale up their exposure to this asset class and increase the share of their portfolios aimed at climate-resilient development. MCPP One Planet builds on successful collaboration between IFC and its partners and will mark a further scale-up of IFC's innovative Managed Co-Lending Portfolio Program (MCPP) private debt platform. Since its launch in 2013, MCPP has raised over $10 billion from 11 investors and provided financing to more than 200 firms across 55 developing countries.Announcing MCPP One Planet at COP26 today, IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop said: "Expanding partnerships with some of the world's largest investors is fundamental to scaling up financial flows to emerging markets for climate-smart solutions consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement. MCPP One Planet will create a global model for mobilization of institutional investor financing in support of the climate agenda for the most vulnerable communities on the frontlines of climate change – in emerging and developing economies.""Our strong partnership with IFC and engaged investors enable us to shape programs like MCPP One Planet and contribute to climate-smart economic growth in markets of scale. Huge sums need to be invested to bring emerging markets along a Paris-aligned trajectory, and we are keen to help structure these public-private collaborations and mobilize the required capital," said Oliver Bäte, Chief Executive Officer of Allianz SE. "In 2016, together with Allianz and IFC, we set up a blueprint to mobilize private capital via the MCPP on infrastructure. Today, we are proud to extend our successful partnership to the MCPP One Planet. It is a great example for effectively scaling private capital for sustainable investing as part of our Development Finance business," said Deborah Zurkow, Global Head of Investments, Allianz Global Investors."The HKMA has partnered with IFC in the MCPP initiative targeting sustainable investments across emerging markets since 2017. We are very pleased to further our partnership with IFC to develop MCPP One Planet which aligns with the HKMA's commitment to green and sustainable investments. Climate risk is one of the biggest threats to our planet and future generations. Joining hands with IFC allows the HKMA to tap into the considerable expertise, experience and network of IFC in sourcing investable and climate-responsible opportunities with proper risk management and governance framework. Together with IFC and other like-minded partners, we believe the MCPP One Planet initiative will support emerging markets in accelerating their transition to low-carbon economies and provide the catalytic and demonstrative effect in the scaling of climate-responsible investments," said Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the HKMA.
